Sabres vs Red Wings

After beating the Bruins in seven games in the first round of the playoffs, the Sabres will now face the Red Wings in the second round.  This will be first time both teams face each other in the playoffs.  In the first round, the Sabres came back and caused a surprise by winning game 6, and then game 7 in Boston.  This is the 2nd year in a row that the Sabres eliminate the Bruins in Boston in a game 7.  Great series Andrew!

No Sabres forward put great stats against the Bruins but Steen, Thornton, Pavelski, Wheeler and Johansen shared the load offensively with 5 or 6 points.  After just putting up decent stats in the regular season, Luongo also struggled at times against the Bruins and ended up with only a 2.55 and a .910 Sv%.  He will need to step up and put up way better numbers against Detroit for Buffalo to have a chance to advance to the Conference finals.

It also took seven games in the first round for the Wings to win its series against the Rangers but Crosby and Jagr pretty much destroyed New York in game 7 to advance to the second round.  In that series, Crosby, Jagr and Tavares did great with 12, 10 and 8 points respectively, while Quick put up good numbers with a 2.28 GAA and .910 Sv%.

During the regular season, the Sabres won the season series 3 to 1 against the Red Wings but the Wings won the last game by shutting out the Sabres 2-0.  GM Cyr knows how to win in the playoffs and Detroit is the obvious favorite to win this series after winning the Atlantic division with 109 points but Buffalo will fight hard and try to cause another surprise.
