PLAYOFF RACE

2014-03-21

Hey all!

We're getting there... 3 more weeks!

First it's really important to understand to new NHL playoff format.  The first 3 teams of each division will make it which mean it's impossible for one division to send 6 teams to the playoffs.  So for example, look at the Atlantic division:  Detroit, Toronto, Buffalo, Ottawa (84), Tampa (82) and Montreal (82) are all in the top 8 of the Eastern Conference but they WON'T all make the playoffs since the first 3 teams of the Metropolitan division are guaranteed to make the playoffs (currently NYR, Devils, Penguins).  In this case, Mtl, TB and Ott are fighting each other for the 2 last playoff spots and the Jackets, Canes and Capitals are trying to catch up the Penguins.

Reminder:

TIEBREAKER
 1- Wins (ROW): Most total wins among the tied teams, EXCLUDING games won in the
shootout.
 2- Head-to-Head Record: Most points in games against each other among the tied
teams.
 3- Goal Differential: Using the total goals scored during the regular season, the greater
positive differential between goals for and against among the tied teams

So we now have the big picture in the Eastern Conference:

2 of these 3 teams will make the playoffs

Ottawa 84  - 13 games left
Tampa Bay 82 -  12 games left
Montreal 82  -  11 games left

2 of these 5 teams will make the playoffs

NJ 82  - 12 games left
Pittsburgh 78 - 13 games left
Columbus 73 - 12 games left
Carolina 72 - 13 games left
Washington 72 - 11 games left

WESTERN CONFERENCE

Following the same rules, the Jets (75) absolutely have to catch the Stars (82), Blues (80) or the Wild (79) in order to make the playoffs.

In the Pacific Division, we're pretty much done already as Vancouver, Anaheim and Calgary should finish 1-2-3 respectively and clinch a playoff spot.

Current standings on the portal doesn't reflect the new playoff format, but we have a file reflecting the actual standings that is updated every day, check the following link.

While we are trying to fix the problem with the portal, you can get updated players stats here

Warning: Trying to access array offset on null in /home/nlmol260/public_html/includes/functions.php on line 181

so on this link the positions we see would that be the potential match ups like the old format when it looks that way?
