2016-17 Season Preview

ATLANTIC DIVISION:

DETROIT RED WINGS

Key Acquisitions: James Wisniewski, Matt Greene

Key Departures: Shea Weber, Corey Perry, Nathan MacKinnon, Danny DeKeyser, Nazem Kadri

After winning the Eastern conference last season but losing in the first round of the playoffs to the NY Rangers, GM Cyr has decided that it was time to move some key guys for younger assets.  Don’t be fooled by GM Cyr though.  He still has guys like Crosby, Tavares, Ekman-Larsson and Suter to lead the team and some good veteran players.  If he decides to make some moves to get help for a run, he could be dangerous.  It would just take one evening with itchy fingers!

BOSTON BRUINS

Key Acquisitions: Francois Beauchemin, Adam McQuaid

Key Departures, Clayton Stoner, Rob Scuderi, Alex Tanguay, Braydon Coburn

Boston had a great season last year finishing with 110 points but lost in 7 games to the Sabres in the first round of the playoffs.  The Bruins top 6 will be scary again this year but might need some help on defense and in goal.  GM Arcesi traded for Beauchemin and McQuaid to upgrade his defense but it will be interesting to see what he will decide to do with Bobrovsky and Enroth down the road.

BUFFALO SABRES

Key Acquisitions: Joe Pavelski, Shea Weber, Joe Thornton, Adam Henrique, Nathan Beaulieu

Key Departures: Elias Lindholm, Duncan Keith, Mats Zuccarello, Eric Staal, Radim Vrbata

After a few disappointing seasons, Buffalo have finally been able to make it past the first round last season, losing to the Flyers in the conference Final.  The Sabres have finished the regular season 24^th in the league on the PP and last on the PK last season so GM Blanchard traded for Pavelski, Weber and Thornton in the offseason to try to improve the special teams.

TAMPA BAY LIGHTNING

Key Acquisitions: Cam Atkinson, Jake Muzzin, Thomas Hickey, Matt Beleskey, David Legwand, Patrick Maroon, Patrick Eaves, Jonathan Ericsson, Mathieu Perreault, Barret Jackman, David Perron, Dave Bolland

Key Departures: Bryan Little, Marc-Edouard Vlasic, Sean Couturier, Cam Fowler, Evander Kane, Sam Gagner, Patrick Wiercioch, Tyler Ennis, Paul Stastny, Andrej Sustr, Michael Del Zotto

The Cheerleaders have tried to work their magic again but Tampa Bay has missed the playoffs for the first time under GM St-Pierre.  The Lightnings are always trying to be competitive and make it to the playoffs year after year so even if GM St-Pierre has been very active in the offseason, expect other moves in Tampa.  Go Crown Go!

TORONTO MAPLE LEAFS

Key Acquisitions: -

Key Departures: Scott Hartnell

Toronto finished 5^th in the Atlantic division but it was not good enough to make it to the playoffs since the Metropolitan division was stronger this year.  GM MacLeod has been quiet in the offseason so it will be interesting to see which direction he will take with his Leafs.  Will he try to add some players to make a push for the playoffs or will he move some guys for younger assets?  The way the Leafs play early in the season might be the deciding factor.

FLORIDA PANTHERS

Key Acquisitions: Brent Burns, Kyle Okposo, David Pastrnak

Key Departures: Victor Rask, Nikolaj Ehlers, Darnell Nurse, Eric Gryba

Even if the Panthers are in rebuild mode, GM Dupuis has not been afraid to make some good calculated moves in the offseason to add key veteran players that will be able to help the team now and for many seasons.  This team is in good hands with this GM and will be very dangerous in the near future.  Unless GM Dupuis decides to get more help for this year, I think it will be very hard for Florida to make the playoffs considering the great competition in the Eastern conference but count on them to be in the mix as soon as next season and for many seasons to come.

OTTAWA SENATORS

Key Acquisitions: Devan Dubnyk, Nicklas Grossmann, Marcus Foligno, Braydon Coburn, James Wisniewski, Mattias Janmark

Key Departures: Kevin Connauton, Brad Richards, Trevor Lewis, Adam McQuaid, Matt Stajan, Dave Bolland

Ottawa has missed the playoffs by 12 points last season and do not expect a different result this season as the Sens lack depth at all level.  GM Therien has some great assets in place but he has a lot of work on his plate to turn this franchise around.  Patience is the key in Ottawa.

MONTREAL CANADIENS

Key Acquisitions: Evgeni Malkin, Jack Johnson, Sean Couturier, Chris Kreider, Alexander Edler, Marian Hossa

Key Departures: Travis Hamonic, Ryan Strome

Montreal’s new management has made a big splash in the offseason when they traded the 1^st overall pick in a deal for Malkin, Johnson and White.  Couturier and Kreider have also been added in the offseason via trades.  Both guys are great pick ups and will strengthen the Habs top 6.  Do not expect Montreal to make the playoffs this year unless they make other deals early in the season.

METROPOLITAN DIVISION:

PHILADELPHIA FLYERS

Key Acquisitions: Mats Zuccarello, Erik Gudbranson, Alex Tanguay, Trevor Lewis

Key Departures: Patrick Sharp, Radko Gudas, Kevan Miller, Radim Vrbata, Marian Hossa, Mike Ribeiro

Congrats to Philly for the division title and for winning the cup.  This team has been properly built to compete in the playoffs by the previous GM and it has paid off big time for the past two seasons.  Now, we shall see what the new management will be able to do with this team.  GM Jobin has started the retooling process in the offseason by moving older players and acquiring established younger guys in Zuccarello and Gudbranson.  The flyers are not deep in net but with a few other moves, Philly can still fight for the division title.

NEW YORK ISLANDERS

Key Acquisitions: Marc Methot, Brandon Pirri, Ondrej Pavelec, Rick Nash, Eric Staal, Bryan Little, Derick Brassard, Justin Schultz, Paul Stastny, Alex Chiasson, Alexander Edler, Marc-Edouard Vlasic, Darren Helm, Nick Bonino, Duncan Keith, Elias Lindholm, Andre Burakovsky

Key Departures: Joe Pavelski, Brent Burns, Kyle Okposo, Joe Thornton, Derek Stephan, Devan Dubnyk, Ryan Callahan, Paul Martin, Mike Ribiero, Nick Schultz, Nicklas Grossmann, Thomas Greiss, Brandon Dubinsky, Thomas Hickey, Kyle Turris, Trevor Daley, Patric Hornqvist, Alan Quine

The Islanders had a very good season last year finishing just 2 points out of the division title and losing in the 2^nd round to the cup champion.  GM Cyr is very active on the trade market and always find a way to put a competitive team on the ice.  This year should be no different as the Islanders should fight for the division title unless GM Cyr has other ‘unpredictable’ plans!  He has been quiet and has not made any trade in almost 4 weeks which is a bit unusual.

COLUMBUS BLUE JACKETS

Key Acquisitions: Kyle Turris, Jared Spurgeon, , Patric Hornqvist, Carl Hagelin, Patrick Marleau, Sven Baertschi

Key Departures: John Carlson, Mathieu Perreault, Patrick Maroon, David Perron, Barret Jackman

Columbus finished the season 3rd in the Metropolitan division and lost to the Islanders in 7 games in the first round of the playoffs.  GM Clarke has never been afraid to make moves to help the team now so expect moves In Columbus if the team do not perform well early on in the season.  The Jackets are in good shape with Holtby in goal and are also decent up front but the team would need an upgrade on defense.

WASHINGTON CAPITALS

Key Acquisitions: Ondrej Palat, Corey Perry, Simon Despres

Key Departures: Martin Jones, Jon Merrill

After a decent season, Washington lost to Philly in 6 games in the first round of the playoffs.  GM Vaillancourt has slowly built his team and it might be the Caps year this year.  This team has a very good depth and might just be a few moves away from making it very far in the playoffs.  Will GM Vaillancourt be risking moving younger guys to get help this year?  That is not the kind of trades GM Vaillancourt usually makes but this can all change if his Caps are near the top of the league at trade deadline.

NEW YORK RANGERS

Key Acquisitions: Thomas Greiss

Key Departures: Ondrej Pavelec, Patrick Eaves, Marek Zidlicky, Eric Nystrom, David Legwand

The Rangers fought until the end and made it to the playoffs, beating a few teams to the finish line.  They were able to eliminate the powerful Red Wings in 6 games but then lost to the Sabres in 7 games in a series that could have gone either way.  GM Emond has moved some contracts in the offseason but the Rangers are still very close to the cap ceiling which might prevent him to upgrade his defense unless he sacrifices a forward.  It should not be a problem for the Rangers to make the playoffs this year since he should be fighting for the top of the division.

NEW JERSEY DEVILS

Key Acquisitions: Colin Wilson

Key Departures: -

New Jersey missed the playoffs by only 6 points last season and it will still be hard for them to make the playoffs this season unless GM Roussel decides to make some moves to help the team in the short term.  The Devils have a few good pieces in place but lacks the depth to be able to compete with the top teams in the division.  It will be interesting to see if GM Roussel will sacrifice some young assets to try to make the playoffs.

CAROLINA HURRICANES

Key Acquisitions: -

Key Departures: -

Carolina have been in rebuild mode since the first year of the league.  GM Smith has a big task on his hands to bring this team to the playoffs especially with the crazy competition in the Atlantic division but the Hurricanes already have a few good young guys in the lineup and some solid prospects to build around.  This season will be very important for this franchise.  If GM Smith makes the right moves, he can turn this franchise around quicker than we think.

PTTSBURGH PENGUINS

Key Acquisitions: -

Key Departures: -

After winning the cup in the first year of the league, not much has happened in Pittsburgh since then, thanks to some non-active GMs.  GM Buitenhuis does not start from scratch as he has a some good players and prospects to build around but this team lacks depth after the few top players.
