La saison morte des Rangers de New York - Partie 3 / New York Rangers offseason - Part 3

2013-08-23

To follow our series of articles on the work of the Rangers GM, we offer you a brief analysis of the draft picks acquired during the offseason.

First, it must be said that the Rangers had no draft picks in the first three rounds at the end of last season. The GM was very concerned about the shallowness of the team and the lack of prospect in the organization. The rebuilt has been very expensive and despite the wealth of the team, in terms of talent, the GM had to think about the future as soon as possible.

It was not until mid-July before GM Emond decides to act. It was after a thorough analysis of the organization's assets that the goal became clear.

"Keep the heart of the team together to remain competitive and develop the next generation in the short and medium term."

Part Three: The depth

The acquisition of the 1st round pick of Buffalo (24th overall) and the 2nd round pick of Pittsburgh (37th overall) will allow the organization to make sure to get two good prospects for the future of the organization. There is some players in this year draft than the Rangers GM would like to get and the organization hopes to be able to get at least 1 of 2. With the two 3rd round pick, the organization hopes to pick some surprises which escaped to the others GM.

In all cases, as it is an excellent year to draft with a lot of good young players, the organization felt compelled to take action and prepare for the future now.

Does the organization tried to trade to move up in the draft or to get a second first-round pick? I can confirm that the answer is YES. However, the price is so high now that it does not really worth it.

Finally, the acquisition of Craig Smith from the Vancouver Canucks is also the result of the desire of the organization to improve its depth in the short term. The young forward, who has an excellent offensive potential, will probably play the season in the American League, but the organization hopes he can join the big club on a regular basis the next season to replace Jochen Hecht, who will probably retired at the end of this season.

In my next article, I will present the new face of your New York Rangers 2013-2014. Stay tuned!
