Changes Forthcoming in Montreal

2026-04-23
MONTREAL, QC -- After consecutive seasons of making it to the post season, complete with a Stanley Cup win in 2023, the Habs have now had consecutive losing seasons and not making the playoffs. "That's the way it goes at times. Teams go through phases. It's nothing new," stated GM Cooley to local media outlets. The team has already reached contract extension agreements with Yanni Gourde, Dante Fabbro and Jordan Eberle. The team is still negotiating with its other UFAs and RFAs at this point. The team has stated that Chris Kreider and Head Coach Barry Trotz will not be returning next year."We wish Chris [Kreider] well and thank him for all he has done and helped this team achieve during his time as a Montreal Canadien. The 2023 cup run wouldn't have been possible without guys like him leading the way," stated Cooley. Meanwhile, Barry Trotz met with team management about a month ago and the two parties have agreed to mutually part ways. "Trotzy has been a huge part of this team's success over the years. He helped us build this team into Cup contenders and ultimately won the Cup in 2023. We wish Trotzy nothing but the best and hope he's able to enjoy life with the family away from the rink," added Cooley.

The coaching search in Montreal is already underway. Question is, which direction do the Canadiens want to go with their search? Younger head coach or older-veteran coach that can develop younger players? Younger players such as Matthew Schaefer and Collin Graf who are already showing how valuable they are in the NHL. Time will tell what the Habs decide to do, but with the coaching search underway, as well as the offseason and free agency looming; changes are imminent in Montreal.

Great article Mike but we heard Graf was interested in playing in Tampa. We need to talk more on this subject. :)
